Monty Williams Fired as Phoenix Suns Head Coach

Suns part ways with coach after two seasons

Williams led Suns to NBA Finals in 2021, won Coach of the Year award

The Phoenix Suns have fired head coach Monty Williams, the team announced Saturday night. The move comes two years after Williams led the Suns to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1993 and one year after he was named the NBA Coach of the Year.

The Suns were eliminated from the playoffs in the Western Conference semifinals this year, losing in four games to the Dallas Mavericks. The Suns were heavily favored to win the series, but they were blown out in Game 7, losing 123-90.

Williams was hired by the Suns in May 2019. He had previously been the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans for five seasons. Williams has a career coaching record of 252-181.

The Suns have not yet announced a replacement for Williams. However, several potential candidates have been mentioned, including former Suns coach Jeff Hornacek and current Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder.
